In February 2018, judy.legal began as an ambitious capstone project at the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology in Accra, Ghana. Founded by Sadiq Okocha, Bright Oleka, and Charles Thompson, our goal was simple yet profound – to solve a problem that had long plagued legal professionals: legal research is cumbersome.
Through extensive market research in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, we confirmed what many lawyers already knew – the tools available for legal research were outdated, slow, and often incomplete. From that moment, we set out to build a smarter, more efficient search engine, underpinned by the most comprehensive database of common law case judgments across Africa.
By October 2018, we had formally registered as Judy Innovative Technologies Limited in Nigeria and in January 2019, we secured seed investment from the Switzerland-based Meltwater Foundation, allowing us to expand our vision. Over the years, our team has grown, and we’ve been joined by legal and tech experts such as Grace Gureje, Percy Nunoo, Barzicial Oku, and others, each playing a vital role in our journey toward transforming legal research.
At judy.legal, our mission is to support the legal profession and the administration of justice by providing easy, reliable access to case judgments and legal information. We understand the vast potential of the common law system – with judgments from over 80 countries that can influence legal decisions across borders.
Unfortunately, many African legal systems are hindered by fragmented databases and undigitized case judgments, leading to lengthy research times and missed precedents. Our mission is to solve this by delivering an efficient, AI-enhanced law reporting service at a reasonable price, ensuring legal professionals can find the precedent they need in minutes, not days.
